Sports complex inaugurated by minister Ganesh Kumar

Sports is an arena where India cannot compete with many other nations. Kerala has a major role to play in changing that image,“  Minister for Sports and Forest K B Ganesh Kumar has said. He was speaking after inaugurating the sports complex at Janaseva Sisubhavan at Meckad near Angamaly the other day.
“The state has many talented youngsters. Proper facilities and expert training are required to tap their full potential. To promote those youngsters, mini sports centres will be set up in panchayats. The Sports Council has been directed to find out the panchayats which are willing to start such centres,” the minister said.
“More than multi-crore sports complexes, the state needs mini sports centres. Youngsters can train at these mini complexes. The selected students from these centres will be given special training. Such a system is being followed in developed nations,” said Ganesh Kumar.
The minister praised the services of Janaseva Sisubhavan.
“When the parents struggle to give enough food and clothing to their one or two children, Janaseva has taken up the responsibility of feeding and educating hundreds of destitute children, giving utmost priority to their character formation. It is highly commendable,” he said.
Janaseva Sisu Bhavan president Jose Mavely said that the proposed sports complex  will have a football court, volleyball court, basket ball court, cricket ground, and a 400 metre sports track.
Many organisations have promised contributions for the venture.
But government support is essential to complete the project, he said.
MLAs Jose Thettayil and Anwar Sadat, district sports council president Zakir Hussain, Nedumbassery panchayat president P Y Varghese, actors Kaviyoor Ponnamma and Captain Raju attended the function.

Get set for an Infrastructure boom

The industrial area in Chambannoor, Angamaly, is all set to get more infrastructure facilities, thanks to the Standard Design Modules (SDM), the industrial infrastructure facility developed by Infrastructure Kerala Limited (INKEL), which will be inaugurated in September. As part of providing more accessibility to the SDM, one new road is being constructed and an existing road will be widened and reconstructed.
The SDM has a total area of 2,20,000 square feet, spread across five floors. Upon allotment, at least 40 companies will start functioning from here, which demands more infrastructure facilities.
“A new road is being constructed through the TELK-NTPC campus in Angamaly to the SDM site. The estimated cost of construction is Rs 2 crore and will be completed in 18 months. The project is being jointly carried out by INKEL and the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC).
Once completed, the road will be useful not only for the companies in the SDM but also for other companies in the Chambannoor industrial area,” said N Sasidharan Nair, Executive Director, INKEL Limited.
The other road which is going to be widened and reconstructed is the short-cut route to the industrial estate from the Angamaly-Athani bus route. The road was renovated three years ago at a cost of Rs 10 lakhs. It is the only road to the Angamaly railway station and goods yard from the industrial area, and is under the Department of Industries, Kerala. If renovated, the road will be useful for South and North Chambannoor residents as well.
“At least 50 industrial units are operational in this area. The proposal to renovate the existing road has been approved by INKEL in principle. The construction of this road will not cost too much. The support from the government is also essential for the project,” said Jose Thettayil MLA.
The industrial area at Chambannoor is located at a distance of one kilometre from the Angamaly railway station, six kilometres from the Cochin International Airport and 35 kilometres from the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT), Vallarpadam.

Low-floor buses are a hit with passengers: KSRTC

Countering reports that KSRTC's low-floor services have failed to rake in profits, the state transport corporation has maintained that the services operated by Ernakulam depot on all major routes enjoy high passenger patronage. According to officials, buses operating between Fort Kochi-CIAL (Nedumbaserry), Aroor- Angamaly, and services from Ernakulam to Aluva, Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam have high demand.
"June -July is considered the lean period as the collection is low during these months. This is because people tend to avoid public transport during rainy season. Otherwise, on a day these buses have an average collection of Rs 10, 000," said assistant transport officer, C Venugopal. He also pointed out that the number of passengers depending on low-floor Vyttila-Vyttila city service and those operating from Ernakulam to Poothotta and Chottanikkara is less compared to other routes. KSRTC officials informed that on an average, a city service generates about Rs 4,500 per day. During heavy rush, the returns go up to Rs 7,000.
Though it is hinted that the transport corporation should get an average collection of Rs 15,000 per day to achieve a break-even, KSRTC maintains that they have successfully operated these buses without any cancellations. The transport officer said that the department has allocated two more low-floor buses to the district.
Ernakulam depot operates 42 AC buses and 8 non-AC buses. Of 120 low-floor buses allocated for the district, 116 are in service. Venugopal said air-conditioned buses are operated by Ernakulam depot as maintenance and repairing facilities are not available in other centres. "The non-AC buses have been distributed to other centres. Though the district was allocated 50 AC buses, we are yet to receive the remaining eight," he said.
